Mr. Madsen graduated cum laude in 1985 from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he majored in philosophy and religion. He went on to attend the Yale Divinity School, receiving his Masters of Arts in Religion in May 1987. Mr. Madsen then attended the Vermont Law School, where he was elected Managing Editor of the Vermont Law Review. He received his law degree cum laude in May 1990. After his law school graduation, Mr. Madsen served for a year as a law clerk to the Honorable Conrad K. Cyr of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.
Following his clerkship, Mr. Madsen became an associate of Day, Berry & Howard in Hartford, Connecticut, where his practice soon focused on representing employers in labor and employment matters. From 1994 to 1997, Mr. Madsen practiced with the firm of Jackson, Lewis, Schnitzler & Krupman, a national law firm which focuses its practice on representing management in employment and labor matters. Having gained this valuable experience, in 1997, Mr. Madsen established his own firm representing employees in employment and labor matters and related litigation.
In 1998, he and Peter B. Prestley formed a partnership under the name Madsen & Prestley, LLC; in 2000, with the addition of Jacques J. Parenteau, the firm reformed as Madsen, Prestley & Parenteau, LLC. The firm’s practice centers on representing individuals with respect to a broad array of employment-related claims, including wrongful discharge, whistleblower retaliation, family and medical leave, disability accommodation, wage and hour, breach of contract, violation of public policy, and discrimination on the basis of age, race, sex, disability, and national origin.
Mr. Madsen is a member of the Connecticut Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and is licensed to practice law before the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit as well as the state and federal courts of Connecticut and Maine. In 1999, Mr. Madsen was appointed Special Master for the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut. He has also written and lectured extensively regarding employment law related issues, ranging from non-competition agreements to disability discrimination to wrongful discharge.
Mr. Madsen has been recognized by both Best Lawyers and Super Lawyers for excellence as an employment attorney.
